ESnet Staff to Share Networking Expertise at 2019 TNC Conference

June 10, 2019

Several ESnet staff are participating in the upcoming TNC conference, to be held June 16-20 in Tallinn, Estonia.

Hosted by GEANT, TNC is the largest European research and education networking conference, and 2019 marks the conference’s 35th edition. This year’s theme, “Forging Digital Societies,” is inspired by two main concepts: the idea that computer networks, by supporting human interactions, help create and forge digital societies; and the innovative model of Estonia’s e-residency program.

During GEANT’s Spectrum Sharing workshop that will be held just prior to the conference, ESnet Planning and Architecture Lead Chin Guok will give a talk on “The ESnet6 Optical Layer - From Photons to Policy.” As multiple R&E networks around the world light their fiber with open optical line systems, they are looking at ways to share the optical spectrum.

During the TNC conference,  ESnet Network Engineer Nick Buraglio will give a presentation on “SDN is the Easy Part: Production OpenFlow” as part of the session SDN and Optical: New kids on the block that is being chaired by ESnet Director Inder Monga, who is also on the conference’s program committee. Buraglio will relate his experience with enabling SDN in Supercomputing 2018 SCinet using Faucet open-source software stack. In addition, Yatish Kumar will present “ESnet6 High-Touch Services: Network Telemetry using Programmable Dataplane” as part of the session Lightning Talks: First Strike; and he will lead a thought-provoking discussion on the evolution of network protocols in the big-data era with a talk on “Questioning TCP,” which is part of the workshop Time to go back to the drawing board?.

ESnet's Eli Dart and Patrick Dorn will also be representing ESnet’s user facility interests at various workshops and meetings held during the week.
